Founded: King Afonso Henriques of Portugal as the Portuguese branch of Order of Calatrava 1162. During the reign of King John I of Portugal, Pope Eugene IV separated the Portuguese branch from the Order of Calatrava creating the Ordem de São Bento de Avis 1385.

Proctecting Authority: Pedro I and his successors, as Grand Masters and Perpetual Administrators of this Order in Brazil by Apostolic Privilege granted by Bull Praeclara Portugalliae Algarbiorunque Regum of Pope Leo XII 15 May 1827.
